Worldwide communications costs

Cell phone call charges average ¥39.4 per minute in Tokyo, the third-highest among major world cities, according to a survey by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. London has the highest average call charges, equivalent to ¥48.2 per minute, followed by Paris, where the average is equivalent to ¥40.9, the ministry said.

The ministry compared the charges set by leading telecommunications service providers in seven major world cities as of the end of March. The other cities in the comparison were Düsseldorf, Germany, New York, Seoul and Stockholm. The lowest average, equivalent to ¥11.7, was found in New York, where fixed charges for oral communication are widely adopted. Charges averaged ¥19.2 in Seoul, ¥26.3 in Stockholm and ¥34.1 in Düsseldorf. Among other findings in the survey, the cost of using Internet access services based on asymmetric digital subscriber line technology was the lowest in Tokyo for the sixth year in a row.
