Nokia 6101 Good overall phone

I like the fact that when you dial a phone number, all the numbers showned are big and easy to read. The camera takes decent picture, light weight, and FM radio can be listened on the headphones or loudspeakers. It has a sleak design, small and very light. It has a personal planner on the phone and you can record your personal messages and other things. This phone could be easily unlock to use with other carriers, highly recommended.

The stable Nokia E61

Having finally seen the E61, I can confidently predict that this will be the must-have executive gadget for 2006. If it works as well as Nokia promises, and the signs are good, then our friends from Finland will have a hit on their hands as big as Motorola's RAZR. Moreover, with all the ho ha about Blackberry's patent dispute case, quite a few companies have started to consider alternative systems, such as the brick-like Nokia's 9300i, loosening Blackberry's hold on the market. (Big mistake by RIM not to reach an agreement faster.) Most notably, Nokia's E61 supports multiple push email software systems - in addition to Blackberry's own software. The E61 comes with the latest edition Symbian mobile operating system, which is reliable and has an attractive, intuitive user interface. As a result of Nokia's co-operation with Microsoft during 2005, the E61 will also sync with Outlook seamlessly - a big plus for corporate users. The really impressive thing about the E61 is that it is an excellent mobile phone as well as a great mobile email platform. It finally means that one gadget will finally perform both functions brilliantly, avoiding the need to carry around both a Blackberry and a phone. You'll also be able to surf the web and the E61 will support other 3G applications depending on local market availability.

Nokia has clearly designed this phone with business users in mind. Materials and build quality are second to none. The screen is gorgeous with 16 million colors and an ambiant light sensor that adjusts brightness automatically. The key board is well laid-out and has a slighty better feel the Blackberry 8700. Using the E61's phone or email functions is simple and intuitive, with Nokia's traditional call buttons placed exactly where you would expect to find them. It has been very well thought-out by designers who clearly know what they're doing. Bluetooth makes in-car use a no-brainer. Emails are easy to read and attachments can be readily accessed. The delay in Nokia announcing this model and its market launch is because greater functionality has been added in this area. In short, it is difficult to criticse the E61. Battery life could be an issue. Some people may prefer the key board of the Nokia 9300i. But all things considered, the E61 does everything corporate users could wish for. The functionality and form factor make it intensely desirable. Nokia may have been late to market with such a device, but boy oh boy, is it making up for lost time with a slick, beautifully designed pice of hardware that shouts: gotta have it!

Nokia 8801 Cell Phone

It is the most solid phone. no cracks, or squeaky at all. The slide mechanism gives you a fantastic feeling when sliding open.

Some people might find its weight to be a weakness, but I find it to be a strength; it really gives you a good feeling of an expensive phone not just a cheap plastic phone (hence, Vertu phones are even heavier). If you do not like to carry a heavy phone, do not purchase this phone.

The screen is brilliant, it is very beautiful. However, it is a little small if you are used to a bigger screen that most phones nowadays have.

The battery life is sort of weak. That's why Nokia give you 2 batteries and a desk stand charger that will charge your phone and an extra battery. If you are a really light user, the battery will last about almost 2 days. For normal users, the battery will likely going to last about a day. If you are a heavy user, you will need both batteries to cover you for a day! I usually just put the phone in the stand and let it charge for the night, and just take it off in the morning.

Today, I took my phone off at about 8 o'clock, and it's 5:21 now, the battery indicator still shows 7 out of 7 bars.

If you are looking for a full-featured phone, this phone is not for you. The camera (800x600 pixels) is not that good, it is okay to take pictures that you will mostly view them on the phone.

I find the RF performance to be a little disappointing, but still better than SonyEricsson (T616 that I used to have).

The buttons are a little small, but you will get used to it within a few days.

This phone is for you if:

- you emphasize more on the looks and feels than functionality

- you do not need PDA functionalities

- you do not care much about the camera

- you do not talk on the phone a lot! (less than 2 hrs a day)

Nokia 6030 Cell Phone

The price was great - it is a T mobile to go Phone- you just slip in your old simcard and you're off. The phone looks great for an inexpensive phone. The build quailty is solid except for the flimsy battery cover. The battery life itself is excellent going for days without charging.The volume is loud and clear if you figure out how to raise it.(During a call press right or left on the pad) If that is still too low, you can put it on speakerphone, a welcome feature on such low priced model. The number buttons are raised and have a great feel. The navigation pad, however, is not designed so well. The middle button is hard to press while the directional pad is very easy. This, coupled with its small size, leads to many mistaken button presses. Reception was very good, and the calls were clear. The screen is a step up from previous low end nokias and the menus are well designed. (You can, in the T mobile version at least, change the lower right corner of the screen to most any function you want.) Polyphonic ringtones sound good, but if you expect the big selection that nokia usually gives you, think again. T-mobile includes just 5 and skimps on backgrounds and games too. You can download more of course for more $$$. Mp3 ringtones don't sound so good on this phone. The FM radio is very good. You do need a headset plugged in to use it( it serves as the antenna). There is no official 6030 data cable from Nokia, but you can find third party ones that let you connect to your computer with the proper software and sync, add media, etc. In summation, If you need quality basic calling capability this is a great phone for the price.

Nokia 6600 Cell Phone

Considering the price you can get these at with a new contract, I couldn't be happier. You can change out the 32mb memory and put in a higher capacity if you prefer. If you load programs and games, this may be of interest. MMC memory is slower and cost more then SD memory. Battery will only last 2-3 days. I think it is supposed to last something like 5-7 days. The last few bars on the battery go really quick. Be prepared. Have a car charger on you. Oh Well. I like the fact that you can have multiple applications up at once and flip back between them. I like that you can make the alarm tone any recording you like. I however do not like that the snooze is only 5 minutes vs. 10 minutes on many others. People have said how big the phone is and do not want such a big phone. Yes it is big, but you are getting a lot of screen size. It is still smaller then several of the old bricks I have had in the past. I can't wait to be able to afford some more applications for it.

China Taking on U.S. in Cyber Arms Race

China can be expected to increase strategic intelligence operations with respect to the United States and its other adversaries, especially as it continues its campaign for "multi-polarity". China employs a wide range of intelligence efforts with respect to the United States, many of which can be traced directly to intelligence capabilities within China's military and government establishment. Because China believes that the United States is a primary adversary, even as the US provides a good deal of the facilitation of China's growth, China can still be expected to continue and increase its strategic intelligence operations with respect to the US.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, China in some ways became the de facto ideological leader of the worldwide Communist movement. China found that it could use international Communist groups and networks, just as the Soviets did, to find persons sympathetic to the causes of Communism and socialism. Indeed, China has actively interacted with and supported international Communists, even persons or organizations known to be involved in criminal activities such a counterfeiting and money laundering. Chinese government officials have been known to meet with those in Communist organizations and student groups abroad, and there are indications such resources are leveraged in a similar fashion as with Russian intelligence.

As something of a flag bearer for world Communism, Beijing has become a "second Rome for Marxism-Leninism". China's Communists, much like the former Soviet Union's, believe world socialism is inevitable and that the Americans are a symbol of what is standing in their way. With the Soviets, the watchword was American "imperialism"; with the Chinese, American "hegemony". However, the Chinese also understand that many in the United States and the West in general view Communism negatively. As such, resources are also devoted to putting forth the images of Capitalism and quasi-democratic ideals, even as the vast populace of China enjoys no such benefit therefrom.

Bones Could Become Conduits For Data Swaps

The idea is that the conduction of sound along bone would be more secure that via radio waves, leading to the possibility of swapping data with someone by shaking their hand.
This general idea was also tackled by Thomas Zimmerman doing research for IBM. His idea did the same thing using signals carried on the skin (which didn't need the FIRM handshake to work :) Not sure how that compares to this, but both manage the same trick.

Intel V8 Octa-Core System, Full Performance Tests

Figuring out how to redesign a program to run in parallel is a terribly difficult thing to do, for the most part. There are sometimes linear algebra problems that appear in science applications that lend themselves to parallel coding, but those aren't things that most users are trying to implement. *They cannot give up on making sequential processing faster.* Making a platform as massively parallel as this is (for a personal computer) will never accomplish what improving other facets of the architecture like memory latency, cache size, and of course the chip frequency. So we have been using machines with four processors for 11 years, and for the most part only one processor gets utilized even after extensive efforts to make our applications run in parallel. The overhead for farming out work is worthwhile only when you have very large chunks of computing that doesn't have to be sequentially processed. I really see this multicore processing stuff as a bit of a cop out.

Samsung WEP200 Wireless Cell Phone Headset

The WEP200 is small, light weight , and easy to use. It was easy to connect to my Sanyo phone and also my LG. My biggest complaint is the volume isn't loud enough. Driving in a car at highway speed is enough to make hearing difficult. In a quiet environment with no background noise, it works great. Also, the charger case is very difficult to open. I broke the hinge on mine within a couple of days. I think I would shop around more before buying another one.

Motorola Razr V3 Cell Phone

The Razr is light, and amazingly thin. I can barely feel it in my pocket, rather than the giant bulge of my old phone. Even though it is thin and light, it is wide enough to be useful. The buttons aren't so small that my fingers can't use them. (I've had this problem with some phones)

Assigning your own functions to the different buttons is very nice. The screen on the outside (when flipped closed) allows for a picture in color, while also displaying all the vital info (time, signal strength, battery meter). One of my favorite features is that the only plug on the phone is a mini-usb plug. Plug your phone into a USB port on your computer and you have an instant charger! And if you buy the Motorola Phone Tools, you can transfer pictures, make your own ring tones, backup your contacts, all while charging the phone.

Battery life is really very good. I only have to charge the phone every couple days. Keep in mind though, if you use the camera a lot, spend a long time talking, or play games on it... these things DO take a good deal of power. The Bluetooth is easy to use and works well for voice or data.

Camera quality. Face it, cell phone cameras don't take good pics. They can be fun or useful, but if you want to make prints, use a real digital camera. This is to be expected. I do with there was a flash memory slot in this phone. With all it is capable of, I'd love to pay a little extra and have it hold a lot more.

Sony Ericsson W810I Cell Phone

Overall, this is an excellent cell phone with lots of features. This easy-to-use walkman player comes with an external 512 MB memory stick pro duo which can be easily upgraded to store more songs. The sound quality coming out of the supplied earphone is fantastic, cancelling all noise around you. The speaker, however, is not as great as the headset.

While not comparable to the dedicated digital cameras, the 2 megapixal camera still takes decent pictures with nice auto-focus function. It also lets you take the video clip, set the shooting mode (normal, panorama, frames, burst), apply special effects (black & white, negative, sepia, solarize), choose the while balance (auto, daylight, cloudy, fluorescent, incandescent) and up to 4x zoom capability. Other common features are included such as messaging, contacts list, alarm, calendar, timer, stopwatch, games. The nice auto stand-by feature can sometimes be annoying because while I am still looking at the screen. While this is rather an expensive phone, I still highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a phone with mp3 player capability and decent camera function.

Jabra JX10 Wireless Cell Phone Headset

It's as small as they say which is nice. It can be stored just about anywhere without being bulky. The ear clip is nicely moldable to hold onto your ear well. I don't feel it fits me well but I don't fear losing it with a head turn like I did with an old Motorola 850, and to be honest I feel most ear bud/ear phones don't fit me well. I found it easy to pair to my phone (Verizon XV6700) and the range has been good for me, but I don't tend to walk away from my phone much. The buttons are well placed and easy to get to (only three main buttons), but using them is a bit confusing as the main button has multiple uses depending on how long you hold it.

I consistently have trouble getting it to connect to my phone if it's off when I receive a call but then want to use the headset. There's a three second hold to turn on the unit, a greater than one second hold to do other stuff (redial), a quick click to pick up and hang up... Maybe there could have been a second button to distribute the load of functions? Incoming call clarity has been perfect, though as it sits a bit far away from my ear (see earlier comments about my fit issues) it often sounds a bit quiet. I use it almost exclusively in my car so ambient noise is always an issue. Even so, with few exceptions callers or call recipients have had very few problems hearing me when using the headset.

Plantronics Voyager 510 Bluetooth Headset

The Plantronics feels extremely comfortable in your ear. At times I forgot that I was even using it. In the package you are provided with three different sized speakers that easily attach to the headset. At first I didn't think I would like this headset because I find that stereo earbuds that are inserted into the ear canal to be uncomfortable. The plantronics, however, do not insert into the ear canal, like some jabra headsets, but instead sit comfortably in the ear. Because of this it also provides better volume, I actually had to turn the headset's volume down while driving because it was to loud (and this is in a Jeep!!!) Callers rated both headsets equal in quality on there end, with maybe a small nod to the plantronics headset, a few callers said they could hear that pesky echo again with the sony. The plantronics headset is also much easier to cary on your person, the boom swivels up and the earpiece rotates to make a nice, small, flat package that can easily be placed in a case on your belt, the sony, however, has a non-collapsable boom and because of this is quite large. In the end the excellent build quality, voice quality, sound isolation, and value (only $38), made this the headset for me. Highly recommended.

Motorola Wireless Bluetooth Headset HS850 - 98656H

I've had this Motorola HS850 Bluetooth headset for a few days now and am generally pleased with it. This is the very latest generation of Moto's headsets and doesn't suffer from some of the weaknesses others have reported about earlier incarnations, specifically the transmission range. While users of previous generations complained that they had to keep the phones in their pocket in order to connect to the headset, I've been able to roam close to 30 feet (the nominal limit of Bluetooth links) from my V710 Moto phone and still maintain connectivity. It helps to have line-of-sight to the phone, but I've had it transmit successfully through a couple of walls, too. That's not to say that the headset sounds too great in these long distance situations. It definitely sounds best when the phone and headset are within an arm's distance of each other. At longer distances the audio quality gets progressively more gravelly, and in fact it will maintain the Bluetooth link even when the audio is completely unintelligible. This is a good thing, I guess, because if you stray too far you can simply move back within range instead of having to reestablish the connection.

The audio quality definitely has an effect on the vice recognition capabilities of the V710. I've found that I sometimes have to repeat a command - especially in environments with high ambient noise - and the "digit dial" mode is much less reliable than it was previously, and may need some training with this headset. Name dial mode is more reliable but still takes retries sometimes. The fit on my ear is not as secure as I would like, but mostly the ear hook just FEELS loose and hasn't really been in danger of falling off. I wish it had, like my Jabra headset, a moldable-wire ear hook; instead it's a one-size-fits-all hook using a kind of floppy plastic, and the speaker sits outside and against your ear with a little rubber cushion. It can be configured for left or right ears.

That said, it is VERY comfortable and extremely light weight, and yesterday I wore it around almost the entire afternoon, several times forgetting that it was on until an incoming call rang in my ear. While you're on a call the blue LED flashes every few seconds, but you can turn it off on a per-call basis if you think it looks too conspicuous in public. After giving it a couple of hours' initial charge as recommended in the manual, I talked on it quite a bit yesterday, much longer than the phone itself would have run on its own battery power. I haven't run it down completely, so I can't say if it gets the full 8 hours as claimed. One of the great things about using this headset with a Moto phone is that they can share the same charger (though not simultaneously) - unfortunately, you can't use it while the headset is charging. Setting this headset up was extremely straightforward and took about 30 seconds: I put it into "pairing mode", discovered it with my Moto V710 and then used the PIN to pair the two devices. The process of pairing the HS850 with my Mac G4 PowerBook was equally straightforward, and I was easily able to get all the Mac's audio output (in mono) routed through the headset; likewise, the Mac was able to use the headset's microphone for audio input. I'd say that's pretty impressive device compatibility!

Motorola H700 Wireless Cell Phone Headset

You hear some sound when on it with your caller. Can be charged if battery is drained and you happen to have a car charger. Very easy to power on and off. Small form factor. Easy to switch off. USB charger cable. Fits the ear perfectly.
Does not have good sound. Sometimes a little erratic in hearing quality. The volume adjuster seems not work perfectly as it should be. Poor sound quality. Fits people with smaller ears. Sound quality needs to be worked on. Could be made to fit all ears in moderation.It's very easy to answer you call when ready for it. The answer or call button needs to be recommended.

Vodafone, Essar seal cell phone deal

The iPhone is not meant to compete against the Blackberry or Windows Mobile phones

The iPhone is not meant to compete against the Blackberry or Windows Mobile phones of the world. The iPhone is not for business customers. Instead, it's for home users that want similar basic functionality to a Blackberry or Windows Mobile device (something that handles e-mail, browses the web on an easy-to-read display, that sort of thing) but don't want it to feel like a "work" phone. Consequently, Exchange support is unnecessary, as is anything beyond basic calendaring and the like. If it can play a few mini-games, so much the better. It doesn't have support for a bunch of third-party plugins? Oh well - the home user won't need them anyways.

Now, what my coworker and I couldn't agree on was how many home users actually want that, and the reason for that is because this market segment has never been touched. Consequently, I'm curious to see how big the "I want a PDA but not for work" market really is.

I'm an Apple junkie going all the way back to the System 7 days. I currently use multiple Macs, have an Airport hub, and am on my second (probably not last) iPod. I have drunk deep of the Kool-ade, and asked for seconds. You will seldom find a bigger Apple zealot than me. OS X is justification for the very existence of Western Civilization. Steve Jobs is my hero. While I would not blow him, I would make arrangements for him to be blown at my own expense if he asked me to, merely out of gratitude for the ways in which his company has improved my life.

But there's no way in hell I'm buying into the at&t EDGE network plan to use this phone. If I could have just bought the phone and relied of free Wi-Fi hotspots for data use (and preferably drop my T-Mobile SIM into it and keep my current plan), I would have gladly dropped far more than the $600 price tag to snap one of these things up. OS X "Lite" on a hand-held? Are you kidding me? Even without the phone, I would want it. The other shortcoming is that the "best iPod we ever made" as Steve calls it, lacks enough storage for my music collection, let alone video files. But as it is... Screw it. I'll keep toting around my 5th Gen 80GB iPod and my RAZR. Get back to me with iPhone 2, and if there are fewer ties to a ridiculously expensive (for what it is) phone/data service, I'll consider it.

Safari 3 Beta Updated, Security Problems Fixed

I think Apple just wants a solid #3 Browser Spot. That way when people test their webpages they will check 3 browsers IE, Firefox, Safari. Before safari for windows Web Developers needed a Mac to test Safari. Thus making #3 Opera. With with the bulk of Mac People using Safari and a modest Windows people (because once it is finalize it will be shipped with Quicktime and iTunes.) So some people will try it and like it better then IE. So it could be a solid #3 and probably more tested for compatability on web pages... Now with websites better designed for Safari it would make the migration to Macs one more step simpler. (fear of compatibility of web pages) I doubt that Apple has plans to make a profit with Safari for windows but more of a case to make sure they don't get left out in the loop. Apple is realistic, they realize not everyone wants or will get a Mac. But they feel if more people given the choice they would actually prefer one. Offing Safari, iTunes, QuickTime for Windows makes sure that these are also well supported to in real life allowing apple to maintain control on the global standards. Otherwise companies of new technologies could forget about Apple. Say make a codex that there is no QuickTime port. or a webpage that doesn't work with Safari. It is all about keeping control on their interests.

Call centers are cost centers

Call centers are cost centers. Support is part of the purchase cost and with razor thin margins, you can only get bottom support.
Compound the low pay with the high technical expectations and you get a recipe for a disaster. Doing it over the phone makes it even worse. In summary, PCs are complex, the customers are for the most part not very good with it to start with, problems can be very complex, interface is so rich that it is difficult to describe over the phone and tech level needs to be high to diagnose problems when the pay needs to be low to keep margins.

It is an impossible situation. In a few years (yeah, right...), with more savvy customers and maybe video conferencing, you may reach a point where you can diagnose remotely. Or remote access to the computer (hello, security breach). For those of you that have had the pleasure to diagnose computer problems remotely for your family, you know what i am talking about. This is what the people on the other end of the phone face every day...

PC support over the phone is a ridiculous idea

It's easy to laugh at PC call centres, but I think the problem is in the nature of the PC itself. It does many things and isn't quite an appliance. There are just too many failure points in software, especially on a system administered by novices.

That said, PC support over the phone is a ridiculous idea. If PC vendors really wanted to improve customer service experience, they should add screenshare software into their BIOS (with an obvious hardware kill switch). When you can actually *see* the other desktop, lots of problems become easy. (And if the network is fubar-ed so this BIOS-based screen share doesn't work, give the customer an onsite visit (charge for it if it's not in the service plan).

US Falls to 24th Place For Broadband Penetration

I see a lot of excuses about why we are falling behind or being caught up to. I see arguments about our large land mass and low population density for example. All that is very true, but it doesn't change the reality that over time other countries will enjoy the benefit of a highly networked citizenry. It is also harder for us to lay roads, power lines, rails, and so forth for the same reasons, but we did it. If you are lacking critical infrastructure then you will become less capable and competitive.

In other words, just because our large land mass and low population density gives us a valid reason for other countries beginning to catch up to us or passing us in per-capita broadband usage, it won't save us from the effects of not being highly connected. America cannot afford to become a telecommunications backwater.
