China Mobile expects to finish building 3G networks

China's largest mobile phone network operator is testing one of the first handsets designed for China's 3G (third generation) network that runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.0 OS. China Mobile expects to finish building 3G networks in eight cities by the end of this year and at least 10 by the time the Summer Olympic Games open in Beijing next August. It is testing dozens of handsets for the networks, which are based on a home grown technology called TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access). Among the phones being tested is the S876 from Taiwan's Inventec Appliances (IAC), which may become the first 3G handset running Windows Mobile 6.0 to launch in China. While it's hard to definitively hand the crown to IAC, it was the only handset maker to offer details of a finished device at the GSM Association's Mobile Asia Congress in Macau earlier this month.

The handset was being tested, and an IAC executive sent photos and further details of the phone to IDG News Service. However, other handset makers, including Zhejiang Holley Communications (Holley Comm), have been working on Windows Mobile 6.0-based 3G handsets for China as well. IAC's S876 will be available to Chinese users in the second quarter of 2008. The handset is a dual mode device, able to switch from 3G TD-SCDMA to GSM/GPRS (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications/General Packet Radio Service) and includes a 2.4-inch touch screen, 3-megapixel auto-focus camera and micro SD card slot. It also has a CCITT (Comité Consultatif International Téléphonique et Télégraphique) keypad with touch wheel control.

U.S. retailers may see record holiday Internet purchases

U.S. retailers may see record holiday Internet purchases after slashing prices on high- definition televisions and leather jackets to attract customers over the Thanksgiving weekend. Promotions by Walmart.com and Circuit City Stores Inc. may push online spending above $700 million today, a single-day best, Reston, Virginia-based ComScore Inc. estimated. Retailers are offering discounts available only online to attract people to their sites as consumers spend less in the face of higher food and fuel costs. Walmart.com is selling Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 with a game and accessories today for $399, less than the $479.66 it would normally cost.

Consumer purchases over the Internet rose 29 percent on Thanksgiving Day and 22 percent the day after, known as Black Friday, ComScore said. Spending on so-called Cyber Monday, promoted by the NRF as the first online shopping day after the weekend, probably will exceed either of those days as people return to work. Online visits on Black Friday, called that because it was considered the day that retailers traditionally turned a profit for the year, increased 10 percent from a year earlier.

Upgrade your Nokia N800

For N800 owners, the upcoming arrival of Nokia’s N810 internet tablet may not be that exciting. It’s always great to see new technology, but when it comes at the expense of your device it’s just not as much fun. Even if you don’t plan on upgrading to the N810, which brings along a slide-out keyboard, faster CPU, and a better looking exterior, there is something to be happy about. That something is OS2008, the operating system that will be found on the N810 and is based on Maemo 4.0. The upgrade will be available on the N800 shortly (probably a few weeks) after the N810 arrives and it will definitely breath some new life into your N800.

The big news lately though is that a number of sites have posted on how to upgrade your N800 before the official release. Easy to follow instructions are available and all you need to do the job is your N800, an internet connection, and access to a Linux operating system. From my experience the upgrade is easy to do and takes under thirty minutes. The chance of bricking your N800 seems low, but problems like that are always a possibility so make sure to back up first and proceed at your own risk. You don’t need a dedicated Linux system, you just need to get at the terminal for a bit. You could use a Linux system, but if you don’t have one you could use a LiveCD or, as I did, VMware and a Linux image. I used VMware’s Player along with Debian, but that is just one possibility. Once you have this setup it’s just a matter of plugging in the N800 and typing a few commands into the terminal.

Contaminated toys in the internet

Hundreds of toys that have been recalled because they're contaminated with lead paint are showing up for sale on the internet, the Consumers' Association of Canada says. And with many parents looking to shop online for the holidays, the association is warning parents to be cautious before purchasing anything. The toys, which were manufactured in China with lead paint, include everything from the highly popular Thomas the Tank Engine to Barbie accessories to Geo-Trax. The latest warning comes after Health Canada urged consumers earlier this year not to buy the toys at stores.

Health Canada could not be reached for comment, but the government department's website lists the toys that have been recalled.

Cash Reward Credit Cards

When you evaluate various credit card options with CreditCardSearchEngine.com, compare the credit card interest rates. Look for a low interest rate card but remember the interest rate is not fixed so it can be adjusted either quarterly or by written notice by the bank or company. You may be able to negotiate with your bank for a lower interest rate.

Compare how finance charges are calculated to help determine the total cost of credit. Look at all charges for each card. Some companies add other fees, such as late-payment fees if your payment arrives after the due date, or transaction fees every time you use the card.

Compare also services and features, such as travel insurance, rebates, purchase protection plans, Cash Reward Credit Cards or extended warranties.

Trimble GPS for BlackBerry smartphones

Trimble has announced that it is making three of its popular GPS-on-cellular applications available for BlackBerry smartphones. Zune media player has sold out across the Web

The 80-gigabyte Zune media player Microsoft Corp. launched has sold out across the Web, to the dismay of online shoppers and delight of the world's largest software maker. While Web retailers have 4 GB and 8 GB versions of the second-generation Zunes in stock, the 80 GB music player is not available on Amazon, Best Buy or Circuit City's Web sites.

Microsoft is prioritized the manufacture of the smaller Zune 4 and Zune 8 devices, and that more of the 80 GB version should be on shelves, physical and virtual, in the next 10 to 14 days. Rumors of a manufacturing delay spread across consumer electronics blogs this week.

Wedding Ideas

Bridesmaids' gifts are given by the bride to her bridesmaids and maid of honor as a permanent keepsake of the wedding. The best gifts are those that can be used both during and after the wedding. You can search online for other good Wedding Ideas to find the best advise.

For bridesmaid gifts, consider items of jewelry that can be worn during the wedding to give your wedding party a coordinated and elegant look. Choose the collection that most fits your style, and then select the type and color of stone to match the color of your flowers and/or bridesmaids dresses. I believe this is the perfect bridesmaids' gift.

Bridesmaids' gifts are usually presented at the bridesmaids' luncheon, if there is one, or at the rehearsal dinner. The gift to the maid of honor may be similar to the bridesmaids' gifts but should be a bit more expensive.

Nokia E51. Business-focussed smartphone

It's the business-focussed smartphone that's going to sell faster than Nokia can make it. Or so reckons Steve Litchfield, who's been rather impressed by the Nokia E51. There are also lessons here for the rest of Nokia's smartphone line.

First impressions of the Nokia E51 are of its diminutive size. Although slightly heavier than the 6120 Classic, it's quite a bit thinner, at only 12mm and seems perfectly formed for its target market, businessmen and women and the companies they work for. And yet within the case lies an almost identical device, at least in terms of OS, memory and software. S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 (this is the second Eseries device to feature it, after the E90) is now pretty mature and most of the applications and interface will be well known to you. The screen dimensions, contrast and reflectivity seem identical to that on the outer screen of the E90, by the way, should you need a comparison, and I want to publically congratulate Nokia's Eseries team for using transflective screens which work well outside in bright natural light - while your Nokia N81 and N76-using friends are squinting at their displays trying to see what they're doing, your E51 (or E90 or E70 or E61 etc) will remain extremely readable, even in the very brightest sunlight.

Graham Leach

The extent to which your computer will permit access to your computer files is something you can control. Be sure that you understand how the access control settings work for your Linux system and that you proactively take measures to block the general public and "guests" from updating your files.

Whenever your workstation contacts data from another source, either via diskette, network, e-mail, Web surfing, etc. you increase the risk that your workstation will become infected.

Remember to Use Strong Passwords. Never leave the password for the administrator account of any piece of software blank and use security software with graham leach standards, like PowerPassword, to protect your passwords. Always protect administrator and user accounts with strong passwords. Encourage all users of your system to change their passwords regularly.

Switch to satellite TV

Tired of the fuzzy picture on your TV screen? Or the cable going out at the most inopportune moment? Satellite may have seemed more costly upfront when it first surfaced, but these days it can be a better value than cable and just makes sense. Cable TV has been around so long now. You know exactly what you're getting; it's the old stand by. But you may not like what you get, or feel like you have a choice about what you get. Now you do and it's just as easy, too.

Satellite TV, such as DIRECTV, gives you a TV viewing experience in a whole new dimension. While cable is known to go down for the same reasons as your electricity does, satellites don't get blown out of orbit. You don't have to worry about not having service on the day of the big game or missing the grand finale of your favorite show. Satellite offers family friendly viewing with channels like Disney and Discovery, and with parental controls in place for the channels and shows you don't want your kids to watch. And now that the technology has been around for a while, it's very user- friendly.

U.S. control of core Internet systems

Debate over U.S. control of core Internet systems threatens to overtake an international meeting in Brazil next week that was meant to cover topics including spam, free speech and cheaper access. The Internet Governance Forum is the result of a compromise world leaders reached at a U.N. summit in Tunisia two years ago. They agreed to let the United States remain in charge. But they established an annual forum to discuss emerging issues, including whether control of how Internet addresses are assigned — and thus how people use the Internet — should remain with the U.S. government and an American nonprofit.

Many countries complained U.S. dominance wasn't discussed enough during the first forum last year, in Athens. In meetings leading to the second round opening in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, China, Iran, Russia and Brazil, among others, won an opening-day panel devoted to "critical Internet resources." Some governments are seeking more concrete results, such as a chairman's statement or negotiated agreement on next steps, though U.S. and U.N. leaders cautioned that specific decisions are unlikely and even inappropriate.

Learn something new

There are some major advantages to online education, including the ability to set your own study time. You may be looking for a promotion or career change that requires additional training or you may simply be ready to learn something new. But with today's busy lifestyle, there's little time to devote to regularly scheduled class time. That's where online education from capella university can be a great asset for a motivated person.

The fact that you are working on your own could very well be one of the major advantages of taking online educational classes, because you don’t need to follow the other’s trend.

iPhone take care of desing

Most high-tech companies don't take design seriously. They treat it as an afterthought. Window-dressing. But one of Jobs' basic insights about technology is that good design is actually as important as good technology. All the cool features in the world won't do you any good unless you can figure out how to use said features, and feel smart and attractive while doing it. An example: look at what happens when you put the iPhone into "airplane" mode (i.e., no cell service, WiFi, etc.). A tiny little orange airplane zooms into the menu bar! Cute, you might say. But cute little touches like that are part of what makes the iPhone usable in a world of useless gadgets. It speaks your language. In the world of technology, surface really is depth.

SMS for free

Worried about your SMS bills? Help is at hand if you have a Yahoo email ID. The facility, which earlier existed only for Yahoo’s instant messenger users, is now available through the Web mail, and will take two to three weeks to roll out as Yahoo has 22.5 crore users worldwide, said IM Swaminathan, director, communications and community products, at Yahoo’s Bangalore centre.

The service could help people save money on international SMS messages that are costly, and also help desk-bound people send instant messages to people on the move.

Nokia postponed the start of its gaming service

Nokia's move into Internet operations faced headwinds, as the cell phone maker postponed the start of its gaming service due to software testing delays, and Warner pulled its songs from Nokia's music shop. The gaming service and music shop are among the cornerstones of the world's top cell phone maker's big push into mobile Internet services under its new "Ovi" brand.

Nokia unveiled the long-awaited gaming service at a large media event in August, saying then it would be available globally in November. Nokia opened its first music store in Britain earlier this week, but Warner Music Group Corp is withholding its content from the site, partly over concerns about illegal downloads at Nokia's file-sharing site Mosh.
