911 Notification System for cell phones

The Department of Homeland Security launched a new website that will allow people to register their cell phone numbers with the reverse 911 Notification System. The system, which was heavily used during the San Diego fires this past week, works by sending out emergency alerts traditionally to home phone numbers. But, because many people no longer have a home telephone the Department of Homeland Security decided to extend the service to cell phones. I think this type of improvement can help in emergency situations.

San Diego residents can register for the service through the city’s website at http://www.sandiego.gov/ohs/reverse911/index.shtml, go there if you are interested.
