The Shadow. New phone launch

When Apple launched the iPhone with AT&T in June, other carriers started scrambling to find something to match it. Today, T-Mobile USA is unveiling the Shadow, a phone that may not be too far off the mark. It has a big screen that slides up to reveal a keypad and has software with eye-catching graphics. The phone is a key part of an initiative launched a year ago to change T-Mobile from a low-cost provider to a company that sells premium services. That's a dramatic change from the brand's past association as the service that gives consumers the biggest bucket of minutes for the lowest cost.

Wireless broadband technology. A challenge for the Caribbean

Adoption of wireless broadband technology poses several challenges for the Caribbean, despite being an obvious option due to the very low level of DSL adoption in the region, according to Canadian network equipment supplier Nortel Networks. The primary concern is the cost of handsets, which can amount to 70% of an operator's costs when launching a new service. That cost can easily translate into a prohibitively high cost of the service for the end consumer. Regulators and operators should look at ways of achieving economies of scale to try and bring handset prices down.

In South and Central America, the two main mobile telecoms giants America Movil and Telefonica have a lot of buying power, which brings down the cost of handsets. The Caribbean on the other hand is dominated by two much smaller companies Cable & Wireless and Digicel.

Gold is a financial catastrophe insurance

There is an increasingly wide range of methods available to investors wanting to buy gold, or gain exposure to gold price movements. From gold coins to complex structured financial products, the most appropriate way will depend on the requirements and outlook of the individual investor.

My reasoning for my interest in gold bars is a little unique. I've tried to avoid the cliché stories about gold and gold bars. They're the easy stories to tell you. I'm avoiding them because, quite frankly, the easy stories gold bugs sell you are not the reason I'm buying.

I buy gold bars because, first of all, I believe that gold is cheap. Gold is a financial catastrophe insurance. And we haven't had a financial catastrophe in the U.S. in 25 years. I'm not predicting financial catastrophe, here. I'm simply buying catastrophe insurance, when it's at its cheapest.

United States is starting to look like a slowpoke on the Internet

The United States is starting to look like a slowpoke on the Internet. Examples abound of countries that have faster and cheaper broadband connections, and more of their population connected to them. What's less clear is how badly the country that gave birth to the Internet is doing, and whether the government needs to step in and do something about it. The Bush administration has tried to foster broadband adoption with a hands-off approach. If that's seen as a failure by the next administration, the policy may change.

In a move to get a clearer picture of where the U.S. stands, the House Energy and Commerce Committee approved legislation that would develop an annual inventory of existing broadband services — including the types, advertised speeds and actual number of subscribers — available to households and businesses across the nation.

AT&T expanded AVOICS

At the Fall VON 2007 conference, AT&T Inc. announced the expanded availability of AT&T Voice Over IP Connect Service (AVOICS). AVOICS is the flagship wholesale Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offer for U.S. service providers that want IP-based connectivity to AT&T's global IP network for long distance call termination. For more than 10 years, AT&T has provided wholesale VoIP solutions, which address the U.S. domestic and international termination needs of service providers with a variety of connectivity options.

AVOICS provides unbranded and unbundled transport over the AT&T network, as well as termination of international and U.S. domestic traffic. Customers connect to the service via AT&T's Managed Internet Service (MIS)/Multiprotocol Label Switching-Private Network Transport (MPLS-PNT) service, which provide class-of-service voice quality, key security elements and advanced network reliability. AVOICS is highly scalable and accepts U.S.-originated domestic outbound (1+) calls and international outbound (011+) calls by using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling.

Windows CE-based GPS portable

Alpine Electronics has released a Windows CE-based GPS system that can be used as a portable, with a windshield cradle, or docked in one of the company's A/V head units. The Blackbird PMD-B200 includes built-in Bluetooth and a tuner for receiving traffic information. According to Alpine, the Blackbird is based on SiRF's Atlas-II navigation processor. An updated version of the Atlas, this highly integrated SoC (system-on-chip) includes an ARM926EJ core, 200 MHz DSP, hardware GPS accelerators, and support for displays up to 800 x 480 pixels. The Blackbird's flash memory (amount unspecified) is said to come preloaded with Navteq map data of the United States and Canada (including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands) and 6 million Navteq points of interest (POIs). The maps can be viewed four different ways: 3D mapping; 2D full map; split map; and turn-by-turn arrow view.

3G phone on a chip

Broadcom is continuing its push into the market for ARM-based mobile phone processors, with a newly shipping, sub-$25 "3G phone on a chip." Using 65nm technology, the BCM21551 combines two ARM11 cores with HSPA (high-speed packet access) modem acceleration, multiple radios, 480Mbps USB, and on-die audio/video subsystems. Broadcom expects the new BCM21551 SoC's (system-on-chip's) extremely high level of integration to enable sleek new form-factors, longer battery life, and lower-cost, 3G-capable mobile phone designs, including both high-volume feature phones and higher-end smartphones running "open" OSes such as Windows Mobile, Linux or Symbian.

The chip is Broadcom's third highly integrated ARM-based mobile phone processor, following the single-ARM11 based BCM2153 HEDGE for EDGE networks and the original BCM2820, which used an external modem. Broadcom has also in the past shown off a hardware/software reference design based on the BCM2153.

Dallas Cowboys tickets

Instead of having to stand in line for hour, or wait on the phone to buy your Dallas Cowboys tickets you can now sit comfortably for just a few minutes purchasing tickets online. And you can take the advantages to securing tickets via the Internet.

In addition to the speed and ease of buying online, one advantage web buyers have, for example, is the chance at getting the best seats of the stadium. This is because huge blocks of tickets are reserved for artists, promoters and others, all of whom commonly sell many unneeded tickets, for some of the best seats in the house, in the secondary ticket market via the web.

Linux-powered communications router

Agito Networks has announced a Linux-powered communications router aimed at helping enterprises cut mobile phone usage fees. The RoamAnywhere Mobility Router works with dual-mode phones, routing calls over WiFi when available, and handing calls between WiFi and cellular networks as needed, the company claims. The device works in tandem with a client application that can be installed over the air on Windows Mobile or Symbian phones. The product works with any cellular network, the company claims, and users' phones have only a single number, regardless of their location. The RoamAnywhere router can even route calls over WiFi when users are at home.

dSpeed

Telecom RTOS (real-time operating system) and HA (high-availability) middleware vendor Enea has launched a new product aimed at helping developers and administrators control, monitor, and debug DSP (digital signal processor) farms. "dSpeed" supports DSP management processors running Linux, and works with DSP clusters based on Enea's OSEck RTOS for DSPs. dSpeed targets 3G carrier infrastructure equipment such as media gateways, packet gateways, and transcoders. It also targets base stations for various 3G protocols, including WiMAX, CDMA, and others. The product comprises a runtime component that executes on the DSP itself, along with client software residing on the DSP farm's "host processor" -- "typically a PowerPC or Intel part running a Linux [operating system]," according to Chris Lanfear, product marketing director at Enea.

Italy's First Steps in Censoring the Internet

The last year, after some guys appeared in a video punching and blaming a kid with Down syndrome, Minister of Education Fioroni brought in to trial two of Google Italy's managers and then proposed and strongly sustained his idea of censoring the Internet to protect the young. Now Ricardo Levi, the prime minister's right hand, is finally successful in promulgating his law on internet censorship. With the goal of "promoting and enriching the pluralism of information," the law rules that everyone involved in "editorial activity" must be subscribed to the "Registry of Operators of Communication" to be prosecutable in case of defamation, where "editorial product" is defined as "any product with purpose of information, education, divulgation, entertainment, aimed at publication, no matter the form it is realized in and the mean it is distributed with." When inquired about the effects of this rule for bloggers, Levi responded, "We have no interest in touching amatorial or personal sites, it would be not feasible".

Moratorium on state Internet access taxes

The Senate has approved legislation extending for seven years a moratorium on state Internet access taxes. With only days left before the Internet tax ban was set to expire, the Senate reached a compromise between lawmakers who proposed a shorter extension and those who insisted it should be made permanent. The vote came about two weeks after the House of Representatives approved a four-year extension of the Internet tax ban. The two chambers must work out their differences on the bill before a final version can be approved and signed by President Bush.

The state tax ban has been in place since 1998. It was last renewed by Congress in 2004 for three years. It is scheduled to expire on Nov. 1. Internet service providers say the price of Internet access could rise by as much as 17% if the moratorium on state taxes were allowed to expire. Some senators, including many Republicans, said that a permanent Internet tax ban was needed to spur more investment by broadband providers and complained that Democratic leaders blocked a vote on a permanent moratorium.

Nokia N82

I'm a pretty big fan of the N-series of cell phones from Nokia, so you can probably imagine my excitement to see the Nokia N82 live and in person. Well, not completely live, but these real world spy pics are the next best thing. As you can quite plainly see through the trio of photographs, the Nokia N82 takes on a rather conventional candybar design with very narrow buttons for the numeric keypad. The call and end buttons have been shoved to the edge, in order to make room for four other navigation buttons, in addition to the controller in the center.

As you recall, the Nokia N82 features a five-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, as well as quad-band GSM, UMTS/HSDPA, secondary CIF camera, 2.4-inch QVGA 16M color display, GPS, FM radio, TV-Out, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 100MB internal memory, and microSD expansion.

Nokia accounted four in 10 handsets shipped worldwide

Nokia in the third quarter accounted for nearly four in 10 handsets shipped worldwide, as the overall mobile-phone market grew a healthy 6.4% from the previous quarter. The Finnish mobile phone maker shipped 111.7 million units, a 10.8% increase from the 100.8 million units sold in the second quarter. The increase, which was more than the collective increases in shipments from the other four top suppliers, raised Nokia's market share to 39.5% from 37.9% in the second quarter.

Nokia also led other handset makers in operating profit in the third quarter, achieving an exceptionally healthy 22.2% operating margin. The average for the top five suppliers was 10.5%. The only downside of Nokia's third-quarter performance was in the Americas. In Latin America, Nokia shipped 12.7% fewer units than it did in the second quarter; and in North America, shipments declined 1.7%.

Spam has gone mobile

It's hard enough coping with all that spam clogging our computers. Now it's stalking us on our cell phones. Spam has gone mobile. Increasingly, consumers answer their cell phones thinking it's important. Instead, it turns out to be a telemarketer peddling time-share resorts, bogus lotteries or even porn. While computer e-mail spam is just a pain, unsolicited text messages on your cell phone can be costly -- 10 cents or more per message. The problem is so new that federal agencies are still unsure how bad it is or how to combat it. But they say clearly that with millions of new cell phone users and billions of text messages tapped out monthly, the annoyance is growing. Wireless officials say they have learned from the experience of the computer industry and are taking aim at mobile spam. But the problem is that it's a moving target.

Sprint Nextel customers can switch cell phone service

Sprint Nextel Corp. will provide customers wanting to switch carriers the programming code they need to unlock their cell phones’ software. The company has agreed to do so as part of a settlement of class actions in California and Florida alleging it locked cell phone handsets to make it difficult for customers to switch cell phone service without buying a new handset. The settlement covers all customers who bought Sprint phones between Aug. 28, 1999, and July 16, 2007. It should allow those phones to be switched to competitors whose networks are compatible with Sprint’s, such as Verizon Wireless and Alltel Corp.

Sprint, whose operational headquarters is in Overland Park, has denied wrongdoing but said it agreed to settle the cases to avoid the uncertainties and expense of litigation.

Wavery South Beach real estate

Contrary to what some people believe, real estate agents do not select prices for sellers or buyers. However, an agent will help to guide clients to make the right choices for themselves. Then based on market supply, demand and the conditions, the agent will devise a negotiation strategy.

In example, if you are looking for properties at Wavery South Beach you must work with a experienced real estate agents that can disclose market conditions, which will govern your selling or buying process. Many factors determine how you will proceed. Data such as the average per square foot cost of similar homes, median and average sales prices, and average days on market and ratios of list-to-sold prices, among other criteria, will have a huge bearing on what you ultimately decide to do.

911 Notification System for cell phones

The Department of Homeland Security launched a new website that will allow people to register their cell phone numbers with the reverse 911 Notification System. The system, which was heavily used during the San Diego fires this past week, works by sending out emergency alerts traditionally to home phone numbers. But, because many people no longer have a home telephone the Department of Homeland Security decided to extend the service to cell phones. I think this type of improvement can help in emergency situations.

San Diego residents can register for the service through the city’s website at http://www.sandiego.gov/ohs/reverse911/index.shtml, go there if you are interested.

Free cell phones. Beneficence program

Free cell phones? Sounds like a scam but it isn't. Through the beneficence of a Florida communications company, Lincoln County Triad has access to an unlimited number of cell phones for the elderly, disabled, or others in need. Obtaining one is as easy as picking up your telephone.

Lincoln County Triad is a three-way effort between senior citizens, law enforcement, and community service agencies to enhance delivery of needed services to older citizens in Lincoln County. The Triad is part of a national volunteer endeavor to keep seniors physically, emotionally, and financially secure in their homes. Triad provides education programs, volunteer training and recruitment, physical and emotional support for seniors, and improved communication between seniors and local support organizations. The 911 cell phone project is just one of the many Triad programs available to assist older people.

The Mobile Ring

There aren’t many scintillating new items being displayed on the show floor at the 2007 CTIA Wireless I.T. and Entertainment expo in San Francisco. But one new game being displayed there did catch my eye. From the “picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words” department, there’ll be a new game available soon for your cell phone called The Mobile Ring. As you can see, this game from Cellufun lets you pit any U.S. presidential candidates of your choice in a knock-down battle—in a boxing ring.

The company suggests you can let candidates throw punches like never before – or just let them beat each other up. This new game is sure to be a big hit with users (pun intended).
Mobile Ring will be available next week. It’s free and will work on a huge number of cellular phones. The long list is available on Cellufun’s Website.

Bill of Rights for mobile phones

Congress is now considering a "Bill of Rights" for mobile phone customers. One thing that drives most people nuts is when they hit areas where there's no cell phone service. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly where those places are, but the "Bill of Rights" would change that. Formally known as the Cell Phone Consumer Empowerment Act, the new bill is cosponsored by West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller and would require certain protections for mobile phone customers.

The bill would require wireless companies to do three basic things. It would force them to clearly explain confusing fees at the bottom of the bills, tell you what their coverage is like where you live and work based on the zip code and lower early termination fees based on how much time is left on your contract.

Dress up your truck

There are a lot of different accessories that you can buy to dress up your truck. There are floor mats, spoilers, fancy wheels, truck bed liner and thousands of other items to help you personalize your vehicle. The two most important things to keep in mind however are safety and legality.

Make sure what you are planning to buy for your truck is legal in your state. Laws vary and what may be legal in Nevada may not be legal in New York. Don't assume that since it is sold, it must be legal. The one accessory that comes to mind to illustrate this is window tinting. There are states that allow windows to be tinted and others that strictly prohibit it. If you do a lot of interstate travel, that tinting may be legal where you live, but will get you a ticket in the next one you enter.

Nokia N81

I think the phone is a compelling choice due to its good mixture of multimedia features on one hand, and its calling and messaging functionality on the other hand. As a music phone, the 8GB version will easily compete with other phones of that kind. As a gaming phone, it'll likely be the best one available for quite some time. Worth noting, however, the N81 is no über-smartphone of Nokia N95 or i-mate Ultimate 9502 caliber.

As a music phone, I think the Nokia N81 8GB performs pretty well. That said, the N81 has its flaws and shortcomings, such as the lack of HSDPA and microSD slot. But so does the iPhone, which we think the N81 is natural to compare against. While the N81 obviously doesn't run a multimedia-oriented Mac OS X, the iPhone on the other hand comes with questionable calling and messaging capabilities. The main target for both phones, however, is the same; namely to attract music aficionados.

Content for the wireless Internet

Nokia sees content for the wireless Internet as key to snapping up more mobile phone users, including in emerging markets. The target market will define what will globally be the next big thing in mobile phones, Oistamo said, but added that location-based services combined with social networks would be one of them. Nokia's recent acquisitions have supported a content strategy as the company has made moves to transform it from being a pure hardware company into becoming an online services company. In July Nokia said it would acquire social networking and photo-sharing site Twango, as millions of users flock to similar sites like MySpace and Facebook. Nokia also recently launched Internet services portal Ovi. And earlier this month Nokia launched an $8.1 billion offer for the U.S. digital-map supplier Navteq, which would be its largest ever acquisition.

Pico-cell in airplanes

Somewhere in the back of our minds, we all knew it was coming sooner or later...and now, its here. Planes in the European Union have been developed with a technology that allows the in-flight use of cell phones. The service, which could be instituted as early as next year for 2nd-generation phones, will allow people to make phone calls in planes cruising above 3000 meters. As is to be expected, cell phone companies will charge more for these calls than any calls made on the ground.

So here's how it works: the planes are equipped with a base-station called a pico-cell that creates a "mini-network" in the cabin of the plane. The pico-cell then transmits to a satellite, which hooks it up to networks on the ground.

Skype is getting ready to make a cell phone

Brand recognition is huge and that's why so many companies want to sell cell phones of their own, even if they're not the ones manufacturing the actual handsets. We've seen things like the LG Prada phone and the Bang & Olufsen phones by Samsung, but those were meant more for fashion rather than function. By contrast, Skype already has a huge following of people who love using their service for VoIP. Recognizing this, Skype is getting ready to make a cell phone of their own that will seamlessly switch between calls over a WiFi network and ones over a conventional cellular network. Skype has reportedly joined forces with 3 on this effort, working on a phone with 3G HSDPA when it's not taking advantage of a WiFi hotspot.

The idea is that you won't even know the difference between making calls on either a cellular network or on a WiFi connection, much like the UMA service from T-Mobile. Word is that a Skype-branded mobile phone could be ready as early as next month, with initial shipments being sent to UK, Italy, Australia, and Hong Kong.

Shop For Weddings

There were some weddings that were extremely expensive and went as far as renting a white horse and carriage, and then there were others that were simple, elegant back yard parties with mainly family and a few friends.

The main purpose of joining your heart and soul with someone is because you love that person and you have common goals and aspirations in life. Your wedding ceremony itself has nothing to do with the party, the food or the people. Having family and friends present is simply to allow them the privilege of sharing your sacred union. The bottom line; it's all about you and your betrothed.

Wedding Planning on a budget does not mean that you have to do it without wedding cameras or style. It simply means you have gathered your own resources in order to save you a few extra dollars.

Firefox browser will be coming to mobile phones

Firefox browser will be coming to mobile phones in 2008. Mozilla's transition into the mobile market has been the subject of much speculation in recent years, but after citing an increase in consumer demand and the success of the iPhone, the tech titan has decided that now is the time to finally expand into the mobile-Web market. The move means Mozilla will add mobile devices to the next platform set for Mozilla2, the next-generation browser technology also due next year. Mozilla has yet to determine what their target platforms will be, but says it would distinguish itself from the iPhone, where Safari has exclusive rights to its browser, by being an open source product that is not proprietary for any hardware device.

AT&T will make Napster available for its subscribers

AT&T Inc. next month will make Napster Inc.'s entire catalog of more than 5 million songs available for its subscribers to download to their handsets. The service, unveiled today, boosts San Antonio-based AT&T's over-the-air download offerings and makes the nation's largest phone company more competitive with rivals Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel, which have led it providing wireless music downloads. Under an earlier deal, AT&T let Napster subscribers transfer music from their personal computer to their cell phone with a cable or a storage card. The new agreement allows customers to directly download to their phones for $7.49 for a bundle of five songs, or $1.99 for each individual song.

If you have unsuccessfully tried diet and exercise

Eating is an American obsession that is quickly spreading to other countries.

Diet and exercise are still the best ways to lose weight, but when all else fails, an overweight person can turn to surgery.

Some opt to have gastric bypass surgery, in one form or another. Others are turning to weight loss surgery (Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding), a famous surgical practice from Journey Lite facilities. That is not as invasive as the gastric bypass procedures. And, it's covered by most major insurance companies.

This is an option if you have unsuccessfully tried diet and exercise. Surgery is generally the last option but it can works for you.

Internet heavyweights go mobile

The traditional Internet heavyweights are not conceding the mobile space to the upstarts. MySpace recently introduced a free mobile version of its Web site. Facebook also has expanded into mobile. And Google bought mobile social networking startup Zingku last month. The trend toward mobile networking is going to be a big theme at the CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment cellular conference in San Francisco this week, with Facebook co-founder Dustin Moscovitz delivering the keynote address. In some ways, mobile improves on a key promise of social networking - that is, it allows you to stay in touch with your friends wherever you go. And these virtual networks are becoming an increasingly popular channel for communication, both for broadcasting and exchanging messages and notes. Users don't have to be at home or in front of a computer to flip through profiles and check in on their friends. And they can now blog and livecast their life as it happens.

Some cell phone companies charge their users $100 to $200 to end a contract

Some cell phone companies charge their users $100 to $200 to end a contract no matter what the reason and disguise their own charges as taxes on bills, witnesses told a congressional panel. Congress is now discussing a bill to end these practices.

The bill requires that early termination fees be pro-rated. Companies now sometimes charge $100 to $200 to users who decide to switch to another service, even soldiers who wanted to drop their service because they were being deployed to Iraq. The bill would also require cell phone companies to identify as "taxes" only charges that were required by federal, state or other regulation. Lawmakers also wanted companies to eliminate the practice of extending cell phone contracts without the consent of the user if changes were made to the bill that were as simple as raising or lowering minutes.

Home fitness equipment

Many fitness gadgets are available on the internet. It's important to spend enough time evaluating the piece of exercise equipment and be sure that you will use the equipment before you buy it. Once you've made that purchase, protect your investment and follow the manufacturers’ maintenance suggestions.

The bottom line is this: Any piece of home fitness equipment is a good choice if you use it. If you don't use it, the most expensive, top of the line item is worthless. You are the only one who can truly determine the value of your purchase and the results you get with your new exercise equipment.

Cell phone has become the number one item

The cell phone has become the number one item more and more people are finding impossible to leave home without. Last year, it was reported that cell phone ownership had increased 497 percent in the previous ten years. According to a 2005 survey by BBDO Worldwide, an advertising agency, 75 percent of cell phone owners had it turned on and within reach during their waking hours and 26 percent said it was more important to go home to retrieve a cell phone than a wallet. Cell phones have changed the way people communicate, and it's no secret that plenty of folks have strong opinions about it.

Cell phone like a hybrid car

How is your cell phone like a hybrid car? No, that is not a setup for a punch line. Seriously, the implications of that question may play a big part in the state's economic development future.

Think back three cell phones ago to the one that might have lasted a day without recharging. And then you had to plug it in right after work so it would be ready for the next day. It used nickel cadmium batteries. Now, remember how thrilled you were that the next cell phone's battery held a longer charge? Those were nickel-metal hydride batteries. Yes, it is hard to remember. Today's lithium ion batteries last far longer and take much less time to recharge. That's precisely why today's cell phones, computers and iPods can do more with less down time. The batteries currently used in hybrids are like those in the second example.

Nokia plans to ship WiMAX-enabled Internet tablets next year

Nokia plans to ship WiMAX-enabled Internet tablets next year. The as-yet unnamed model or models in Nokia's Linux-powered "N-series" Internet Tablet line will use Intel "Baxter Peak" WiMAX chips and will support Sprint's "Xohm" WiMAX service. WiMAX technology was originated by Intel in 2004, positioned early on as a way to bring the Internet to the masses, including people in developing nations without the resources for copper-based "last mile" infrastructure, and in rural areas of the U.S. where low population density has rendered other network distribution techniques impractical.

Nokia's WiMAX-enabled N-series Internet tablets are expected to work initially with Sprint's Xohm service, which debuts in U.S. metropolitan areas next year. The N-series tablets will run Linux, and use Intel's "Baxter Peak" WiMAX radio chipset, the companies have disclosed. Baxter Peak is said to use the same silicon as Intel's "Echo Peak" MiniCard module for laptops and ultra-mobile devices, but optimized for small form factors and low power consumption.

San Antonio Apartments

In the ideal world, the apartment hunting process is condensed into one montage, making it look like the apartment was rented in one afternoon. For many, this is an unrealistic scenario. How long it takes to find San Antonio Apartments depends on the rental market in your area.

Some move so fast that it indeed takes only a week, from answering the ad to moving in. Others are much slower, and you must begin the search a few months before you actually need to move in.

Don't get caught going to view an apartment only to discover they want you to move in next week; or conversely that it won't be available for another two months, but you need an apartment in two weeks. Find out from people in the know when you must begin viewing apartments relative to your move-in date.

Flash Lite 3

Adobe has produced a version of its Flash player for mobile devices, dubbed Flash Lite 3, that is designed to offer video quality on cell phones that more closely matches desktop computers. No word yet on whether or not this is the version of Flash that will eventually end up on Apple's iPhone, but Nokia has already signed on for its cell phones. Should Nokia manage to release new cell phone models with Flash Lite 3 before Apple can add Flash support to the iPhone, and potentially the iPod touch, it could give the company a leg up in the mobile multimedia market. Le Epting, head of the cell maker's community site Forum Nokia, commented "Flash Lite 3 will enable us to deliver richer content to our customers, such as videos and animated ringtones."

New mothers go to the internet for advice

A new study has revealed that new mothers, who earlier used to take their relatives and friends' advice on how to bring up babies, have now started to rely on the internet for the same purpose. While four in five women reported surfing the internet instead of seeking a loved one's suggestion during pregnancy or after giving birth, almost 50 per cent of the women surveyed said that they would rather switch on their computers in the evening than using the telephone to contact someone they knew could give them advice. Twenty per cent of the 4,000 women polled said that they had surfed baby-related websites in the middle of the night when it was difficult to contact any friends, relatives and health visitors.

One in five women also said that they logged on to internet parenting forums to get the information they needed because they liked being able to chat to other mothers online, and to finding a solution to a problem. The survey also showed that more than a third of mothers used both online forums and baby groups to get help and advice. Thirty-five per cent women even said that they considered online forums to be reassuring.

Best hotel rates in Mexico

The best hotel rates in Mexico come with the most strings attached. Check cancellation policies carefully, and find out if parking is included; take that into account when comparing rates. Check the local calendar to see what major events are happening during your Mexico Vacations plan. An arts festival can dramatically inflate room rates in an ordinarily sleepy seaside town.

Business travel drops during the summer months, however, which makes this a good time to visit major cities. You can get a lot of luxury for less by booking a bargain summer weekend at a hotel that normally caters to business travelers. Meanwhile, weekends at traditional summer destinations can be ferociously busy, so consider a midweek stay.

Online community that guides developers of specialized software

It's no secret that companies privately develop programs to improve their internal operations. But more often than not, those apps -- which could prove immensely useful to other businesses -- are kept secret. Maybe the companies don't see a larger value in their creations, or they simply don't want to diversify into software sales. That's why the Austin, Texas, company Fluid Innovation has created Virtual Ventures, an online community that guides developers of specialized software within the business world to possible buyers of their apps on the open market.

Virtual Ventures, which works like a videogame, recently helped find a home for a large corporation's global mailing-and-tracking system used for external billing. Like all of the game's participants, the company's anonymity is assured.

AT&T to Indian telecom market

The world's third-largest mobile operator by subscriber base, AT&T of the US, is all set to re-enter the rapidly growing Indian telecom market, subject to new guidelines being framed by the department of telecommunications (DoT). The company applied for a unified access service licence (UASL) for 22 circles across the country. AT&T will be partnering the Mahindra group, with which it currently offers international and national long distance services, for its mobile services. AT&T's submission came on the last date fixed by the DoT for UASL applications. AT&T exited the Indian mobile services market in July 2005, when it sold its equity in Idea to the Tata and Aditya Birla groups. It entered the Indian market through a JV with the Aditya Birla group by acquiring cellular mobile licences for Maharashtra and Gujarat in 1995. Later, it merged with Tata's Andhra circle to form Idea.

Adjusting to a new wave of Internet-age travelers in search of unique and authentic travel experiences, hotels are revolutionizing their information desks. High-end brands are upgrading concierge operations and training staffs to improve their neighborhood knowledge. Other brands are looking for better ways to share information with guests electronically about local restaurants, events and attractions.

They want experiences that provide lasting memories and give them something to brag about at cocktail parties.

Configure your computers for safety

The extent to which your computer will permit access to your computer files is something you can control. Be sure that you understand how the access control settings work for your specific operating system and that you proactively take measures to block the general public and "guests" from updating your files.

Whenever your workstation contacts data from another source, either via diskette, network, e-mail, Web surfing, etc. you increase the risk that your workstation will become infected.

Remember to Use Strong Passwords. Never leave the password for the administrator account of any piece of software blank or make a Password Reset each time you enter. Always protect administrator and user accounts with strong passwords. Encourage all users of your system to change their passwords regularly.

Cell phone banking is increasing its popularity around the world

More than 5.5 million Filipinos now use their cell phones as virtual wallets, making the Philippines a leader in providing financial transactions over mobile networks. Mobile banking services, also catching on in Kenya and South Africa, enable people who don't have bank accounts to transfer money quickly and safely. The system is particularly useful for the 8 million Filipinos who work overseas and send money home. Previously they sent money via international bank wire transfer, which costs $2.50 and takes two days to clear. The phone method costs only 13 cents and is instantaneous. Cell phone banking is increasing its popularity around the world.
