592 millions of Chinese use cell phones
More than 45 percent of China's 1.3 billion population now use cellular phones, government figures reveal. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said cell phone subscribers in China jumped 44.8 million in the first five months of this year to reach 592 million at the end of May. The increase is credited to rate cuts announced by mobile operators to draw more customers.
On the other side, the report said the number of landline or fixed-line users dropped by 6.5 million to 358 million in the same period. The jump in the number of cellular phone subscribers translated to substantial gains for the telecommunications sector, which reported revenues of $48 billion in the first five months of this year, up 9.6 percent from year-ago levels.

Cell phone in your wrist
Cellular phones have gotten smaller and smaller – that’s what people want. However, the handling doesn’t necessarily get better with decreasing dimensions. One area of improvement is the general application, as a communications device such as a
The Hong Kong based OEM manufacturer Man Power Hi-Tech Limited and Marble Watch Manufacturing had only a tiny booth, but they demoed the latest version of the Cell Phone Watch. The model MP2008B is based on an operating system its makers weren’t able to specify any further. It is based on a 1.8” TFT touch screen display, supports the three key GSM bands at 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz, comes with Java, WAP, a MP3 player and even MPEG4 video playback. We couldn’t try that one as there was no video file on the demo watch.
Beware of calls from these numbers
The Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana warns consumers to beware of calls from two numbers: (201) 621-5694 and (201) 621-5695, from which an area resident reported receiving calls every day, numerous times, on her cell phone, despite her being listed on the Do Not Call Registry. The customer said the numbers appeared to be unlisted or not available via whitepages.com. Whenever she tried to reach them, the numbers were busy, so she was unable to determine who the caller was, the bureau said, adding it appears both of the numbers are part of a scam.
The second number is a scam number that will call and say it's regarding a government grant for which the consumer has applied. They claim they will send you free money for only $3.88 in shipping and handling. Once again, scam. Some people even said they asked for personal information (Social Security. addresses and other information).

Lucrative way to earn money
Looking to drop some cash on coins? Go for it! Investing in coins has been a popular hobby and lucrative way to earn back more money for quite some time. And why shouldn't it? One of the many great things about investing in rare coins like the morgan dollar is that they are a private investment, and you can find several good coin dealer to advice you. There are many things you should know about this practice before getting involved, the biggest one being that you shouldn't expect to see returns on your investments for 1 year or more. That means whatever rare coins you buy you should hold on to for at least 1 year, because they won't be worth anything should you decide to unload them before that time.

Cell phone statistics
For nearly three in 10 households, don’t even bother trying to call them on a landline phone. They either only have a cell phone or seldom if ever take calls on their traditional phone.
The federal figures, released this week, showed that reliance on cells is continuing to rise at the expense of wired telephones.
In the second half of last year:
• 16 percent of households only had cell phones
• 13 percent also had landlines but got all or nearly all their calls on their cells
• The number of wireless-only households grew by 2 percentage points since the first half of last year.
• Underscoring the rapid growth, in early 2004 just 5 percent had only cell phones.
• Households with cell phones who rarely if ever use their landlines grew by 1 percentage point since the first half of last year.

Coin dealer
There is an increasingly wide range of methods available to investors wanting to buy gold, or gain exposure to gold price movements. From gold coins to complex structured financial products, the most appropriate way will depend on the requirements and outlook of the individual investor.
My reasoning for my interest in gold coins is a little unique. I've tried to avoid the cliché stories about gold and gold coins. They're the "easy" stories to tell you. I'm avoiding them because, quite frankly, the easy stories gold bugs sell you are not the reason I'm buying.
I buy gold coins with a coin dealer because, first of all, I believe that gold is cheap.

Nokia 5310: XpressMusic
XpressMusic has been one of the most successful logos ever created by the Finnish giant, Nokia. Thus, as soon as Nokia 5310 has been rumored, fans of the XpressMusic series were thrilled about its look and features. It seems that Nokia's 5310 candy-bar might be the right answer to Sony Ericsson's growing line of Walkman series devices. Slimmer than any other music phone available on the market, Nokia 5310 Xpress Music is one of the few handsets to feature a dedicated audio chipset. Even though its price might suggest that it belongs to the mid-level class, in terms of quality Nokia 5310 handset is definitely a tier 1 device. One of the reasons is exactly the low price that you have to pay compared with its high number of good quality features. Announced in late summer 2007 (August), Nokia 5310 XpressMusic was out on the market 2 months later, in October 2007. The handset can be acquired for about USD 280$ without any plan, but depending on the location and plan, its price can be considerably lower.
Nokia 5310 XpressMusic adopts a standard candy-bar form, pretty much classic for Nokia's bar handsets. What really amazes is the slim thickness of the phone – only
Nokia 5310 XpressMusic runs on a S40 5th Edition interface, which is the latest user-interface coming from Nokia. If you wonder what happened with the 4th Edition, which should've been out right before the 3rd then look no further, as Nokia decided to drop it this one's favor. If you had a Nokia handset before that didn't have a Symbian OS, then this candy-bar will probably feel the same.

Prepare for the coming storm: Cell phone spam
Cell phone spam is a "perfect storm" of annoying attributes. It audibly interrupts your life like telemarketing. It's cheap to mass-produce like e-mail spam. And it holds you hostage like TV ads. There will be more than 4 billion cell phones to target by the end of the year. Yet cell phone advertising represents just about 1 percent of the total money spent on advertising. eMarketer projects that the $421 million spent on cell phone ads in the
Advertisers speak of an ominous sounding "paradigm shift" in mobile advertising, where more of the spam will be multimedia, targeted and tracked. One use for ads will be subsidized services. We may very soon see major carriers offering free wireless service in exchange for ads. Those ads will pop up in the middle of YouTube videos, or play at the beginning of phone calls.

Panasonic rules in Japan
Panasonic has become the first cell-phone manufacturer to ship 100 million units in the Japanese market. The company first entered the market in 1979 when it launched its TZ-801 analog handset for the new car phone service of NTT Public Corp., the government-owned forerunner to the privatized NTT. It followed these six years later with the TZ-802A in 1985. The handset was a shoulder phone, so called because it could detached from a car holder and carried around over the user's shoulder. It weight about
The first handheld phone from Panasonic, the TZ-802B, was a brick-like model launched in 1987. It debuted its first digital model for NTT's PDC (Personal Digital Communications) network, a Japan-developed second generation standard that failed to take off overseas, in 1991, and by June 1997 had hit shipments of 10 million phones. More recently Panasonic was one of the first phone makers to produce a handset for NTT DoCoMo's 3G services, which was the first commercial 3G service to launch when it started in 2001. At about the same time Panasonic hit shipments of 50 million handsets.

Android. A new operating system for cell phones.
After initially being standoffish, the head of AT&T Inc.'s wireless arm has taken a liking to Google Inc.'s project to create a new operating system for cell phones.
AT&T has been something of a holdout from Google's Open Handset Alliance. T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel Corp. are members, and Verizon Wireless has said it will throw its network open to any device, which would include phones with the software, called Android.
One of Google's aims with the software is to make its Web services, like search, e-mail and maps, easily accessible on a cell phone. By extension, it wants to extend its dominance in Internet advertising to the wireless sphere. Phones using the software are expected to show up later this year.

Tips to extend your cell phone battery
- Consult your phone's user manual for charging instructions that are specific to your phone.
- Reduce the brightness of your phone and lower the backlight time. You should be able to do this by going to the settings menu of your phone.
- Don't take photos, play games, listen to music or surf the Internet. These functions drain your battery quickly.
- If you are not getting service, turn the phone off. When your phone is constantly searching for service, it can run down the battery.
- Whenever possible, charge your phone with a wall charger instead of a car charger. Car chargers do not charge phones as reliably as wall chargers.

LG LN790
This feature-rich navigator offers sophisticated abilities such as text-to-speech conversion, a traffic receiver, and a Bluetooth phone interface, all in a box with a big 4.3-inch screen. Still, the LN790's price ($650) is way too high for a personal navigator these days, no matter how capable it may be.
The menu structure and the user interface on the LN740 and LN790 are identical except for some additional features on the latter. For both, the underlying navigation software comes from Destinator Technologies, a GPS software company that markets its products for PDAs, smartphones, and OEM partners. In fact, software from Destinator Technologies also powers the recently reviewed Pharos Drive GPS 250 ($299.99 list). While you'll notice many similarities shared by the user interface of the Pharos and the LN790, there are differences. That's because each manufacturer can tweak the UI and software to differentiate its products from competitors' devices.

Are you interested in the Nokia N78?
For the people interested in the Nokia N78, there could be some good news coming down the pipeline because AT&T could be adding the Symbian smartphone to their lineup. The Nokia N78 has a beautiful piano black finish, but that's not the main reason why you'd want this phone. It's because it's got US-friendly 3G bands and this is a strong indicator that Nokia wants AT&T to have it. The user manual for the N78 also seems to point in this direction. With the N95 also rumored to be AT&T-bound, the iPhone could be in for some competition from its stablemates.

Nokia launched a total of 33 handsets in Taiwan last year and plans to offer a similar amount of new models in 2008, with over 50% of the new handsets supporting 3G technology.
Sales of 3G handsets now account for about 40% of total handsets sold in the Taiwan market compared to 30% at the end of last year. The sales of 3G handsets will accelerate in the rest of the year.

3G mobile networks
In the U.S. mobile broadband market, all major mobile carriers except T-Mobile have launched 3G mobile networks. At the end of 2006, out of the 225 million cellular subscribers in the United States, 15 million used a 3G-based mobile broadband service via cell phone, PDA, laptop or other device. Also, we estimate there were 3.5 to 4 million data card service subscribers in the U.S. in mid-2007. While WCDMA/HSPA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access/High Speed Packet Access) technologies dominate worldwide, CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) operators such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel currently own the majority of mobile broadband customers in the U.S. These two companies have both commercially deployed EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized), and together they accounted for 13 to 14 million subscribers at year-end 2006.
AT&T`s mobile broadband business also has shown great market traction. In October 2007, it introduced its first HSPA-compatible data card service, making AT&T's mobile broadband service comparable to Verizon and Sprint's in terms of throughput. In terms of other wireless technologies, although AT&T and BellSouthhave tested mobile WiMAX, their intent was to deliver broadband services to regions not covered by its DSL (digital subscriber line) network. AT&T made it clear that it will not be aggressive in alternative technologies, evidenced by its divestiture of WiMAX spectrum to Clearwire. T-Mobile USA, the U.S. operation of T-Mobile International, has been the slowest to join the mobile broadband bandwagon. One of the reasons is the lack of licensed 3G spectrum. As a result, T-Mobile had been suffering from busy network traffic and deficient reception. Fortunately, its success in the Federal Communication Commission Advanced Wireless Services spectrum auction in Q4 2006 more than doubled its spectrum holdings in the top 100 markets. T-Mobile USA began rolling out its UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) network in March 2007, and the company plans to complete most of the network by 2008.
Internet is far from infinite
The Internet often seems like a limitless landscape, connecting billions of hyperactive endpoints, with more added by the minute. But ask some of the engineers quietly working to keep those billions of nodes seamlessly connected and they'll tell you the Internet is far from infinite. In fact, it may be starting to get a bit crowded.
The problem is simple math: the Internet Protocol addresses that are assigned to differentiate networks and individual computers at the edges of the Internet have 32 digits, allowing for only a finite number of addresses--about 4.2 billion. That may seem like plenty of space for the world's online population. But huge swaths of IP addresses were originally allocated to the groups that helped build the Internet, starting with the Department of Defense and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and can't be reassigned.
NOD32 and other tips to protect your PC
The extent to which your computer will permit access to your computer files is something you can control. Be sure that you understand how the access control settings work for your Linux or Windows system and that you proactively take measures to block the general public and "guests" from updating your files.
Whenever your workstation contacts data from another source, either via diskette, network, e-mail, Web surfing, etc. you increase the risk that your workstation will become infected.
Remember to use strong antivirus software. Never leave the password for the administrator account of any piece of software blank and use proven security software like the NOD32
Always protect administrator and user accounts with strong passwords. Encourage all users of your system to change their passwords regularly.

New Geotate GPS system
Geotate has developed a software-based GPS system that could overcome many of the challenges inherent in today's geo-tagging systems in cameras, personal navigation devices and mobile phones. Geotate was spun off from semi-conductor firm NXP, following the development of the 'Capture and Process' GPS platform. The software captures and stores a short burst of available satellite data rather than taking the time, processing power and battery life to acquire a satellite fix.
The data is then processed via web-based services, either in real time or at a later date. Geotate claims that this method dramatically reduces the cost and power requirements of handling GPS satellite signals, removing hurdles for the use of GPS signals in resource-limited devices such as cameras and location-loggers. The company reckons that the technology will allow mainstream camera makers to enter into the market for GPS in consumer devices, a sector analyst firm IMS Research predicts will increase five-fold by 2011.

Cell phone jammer
A cell phone jammer is a device that blocks transmission or reception of signals, usually by creating some form of interference at the same frequency ranges that cell phones use. As a result, a cell phone user will either lose the signal or experience a significant loss of signal quality.
Cell phone jammers have both benign and malicious uses. Police and the military often use them to limit or disrupt communications during hostage situations, bomb threats or when military action is underway. Portable personal jammers are available to enable their owners to stop others in their immediate vicinity (up to 60-
Cell phones and sleep may not mix
A study funded in part by cell phone makers themselves finds cell phones and sleep may not mix. Doctors asked men and women between the ages of 18 and 45 to talk on cell phones before bed. Some were exposed to radiation similar to a wireless signal. Others talked on "phoney" phones that released no radiation.
Those exposed to radiation reported headaches, took longer to fall asleep and didn't sleep well through the night. Scientists believe cell phones radiation may activate the brain's stress system.
We all need deep sleep to feel rested and it's crucial for teens, who produce hormones while sleeping.

PBXtra 4.0
Fonality have released a significant upgrade to their flagship hybrid-hosting platform, PBXtra 4.0. It's been over a year since the last release, and the time has not been frittered away. PBXtra has so many new features and improvements we're just going to hit the high points. The first one is its FindMe function has been so improved it might as well be called Stalker. Except you can turn it off. Anyway it uses a bit of clever artificial intelligence to determine presence—when it detects that your mouse or keyboard have not moved for a set period of time, it forwards your calls in whatever way you've configured forwarding. But what happens if you're already on the phone but not touching the computer? No problem, because you have already configured it to not go looking for you when you're already on the phone. It also finds your active SIP device no matter where you are, whether you're in the office or at a remote location.
The FindMe control panel lets you easily create complex FindMe rules, such as times of day and days of the week, whitelists, super-VIP priority whitelists, and blacklists. A new feature that goes along with FindMe is Boomerang Mobile Integration. Boomerang allows calls received on mobile phones to be "boomeranged" back to any extension with a few keypresses. You can also record calls and store them on your PBXtra server. FindMe requires HUD, which is a user control panel, system administrator monitoring, and control panel, click-to-call-email-chat-and-more interface. HUD is a wonderful time-saving application, which you can see for yourself by taking the free version for a test-drive. There is a new Call Screening feature that makes it easier than ever to screen your calls. Your callers must say their name, and then you decide if you want to accept the call, send it to voicemail, play a rude sound effect, or reject the call. (Actually there is no rude sound effect, but it wouldn't be difficult to implement one.)
Another new feature is Foncall. This is a Firefox plugin that lets you click on any phone number on a Web site to call it. Yet one more useful and cool new feature is a graphical FXS/FXO and T1 interface card configurator—configure your interface cards with a few mouse clicks. That's just the bits that I think are noteworthy; check out the release notes for an extensive list of new features and improvements.

The new Sprint Mogul Phone
Sprint Nextel Corp. is upgrading one of its cell phone models so that it can connect to a faster data network, doubling its download speeds and boosting upload speeds by about eight times. Both Sprint and Verizon Wireless operate so-called EV-DO Rev. A networks, but have used them only for laptop cards. Their fastest phones have used the older and slower EV-DO Rev. 0 network. Sprint it was releasing a software update for the Mogul phone, made by HTC Corp. of
The Mogul is a smart phone that runs Windows Mobile software and can be used as a modem for a laptop. It costs $199.99 with a two-year contract and went on sale in June. The software update will be available immediately from HTC's site. Verizon Wireless has not announced a phone using Rev. A. Spokeswoman Brenda Raney said the main advantage of Rev. A is higher upload speeds, which is important to laptop users but less so for cell-phone users. AT&T Inc. already sells phones that use its fastest network technology, known as HSDPA, for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. Its listed download speed is the same as EV-DO Rev. A, with a slightly higher upload speed.
Listening on a cell phone can make a driver as dangerous as a drunken one
Listening on a cell phone, even with a headset and free hands, can make a driver as dangerous as a drunken one, a new study suggests. Researchers have previously explored this territory, but
In the study, to be published in the journal Brain Research, 29 drivers, ages 18 to 25, used a driving simulator while inside a sophisticated brain scanning machine, called functional MRI. They steered a car along an empty but winding two-lane highway at a fixed speed of

Chumby
If you cross an alarm clock, a picture frame and an Internet radio player with a gerbil, you would get the Chumby, possibly the least threatening-looking electronic device ever. It's a tiny computer enclosed in a stuffed leather pillow the size of two fists, but much less aggressive. The 6-inch LCD screen is touch-sensitive, and shows pictures, news headlines, games, incoming e-mail and other snippets of infotainment from the Internet.
It retrieves these goodies via Wi-Fi, so you need a home hotspot to use the Chumby. It needs to be plugged in to a power outlet, so don't start dreaming of using the Chumby as a squishy, $179.95 substitute for an iPhone. But it can replace your alarm clock, rousing you with podcasts, Internet radio, or music you load on a USB drive. It can play your iPod's MP3s through the built-in speakers. You can put it on the kitchen counter as a Web radio that shows pictures from your Flickr account when you're not listening.
Check your internet speed
Many factors can affect your speed, like general Internet congestion, slow Web sites, the number of other users on the provider’s network or your computer’s own network settings. If you are using a wireless connection, weak signals or interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones could also be slowing things down. But Internet service providers also advertise higher connection speeds than what you might possibly expect to get in regular use. Many providers give you faster speeds to download data than you get for uploading files to the Internet, but there are ways to test both your download and upload speeds.
One of the best ways to check is to use a Web site that offers to test your connection speed, typically by sending a small bit of data between the site and your computer and clocking the transfer time. There are several such sites around the Web that can be found with a quick search for “Internet connection speed.” Two options are www.speedtest.net, which displays an animation of a speedometer, and the page of broadband tests and tools at www.dslreports.com/tools.

Nokia E90 Communicator
It took Nokia almost 3 years to refresh its Communicator series, which made as some of the best smartphones targeting businessman class, back in 2004-2005. Those that are more used with Nokia's Eseries handsets won't be disappointed either, as the new Nokia E90 Communicator is a strong link between the two business series. Probably the smartphone won't be a huge market success, mostly because its sizes and weight, but it will surely replace successfully many of its co-series brothers such as Nokia 9300 and 9500, Nokia E61 or E65. Especially created to serve businessmen on the go, Communicator series smartphones had also been fitted with their own operating system – Symbian S80 to be able to meet any demands. But time passed and the 'bulky' S80 UI has been replaced with the new Symbian S60 3rd Edition, which is much faster and offers more functionality to the user. For that matter, I consider Nokia E90 being a huge step forward even if it's just because it features the new Symbian 9.2 OS with 3rd Edition S60.
Announced in February 2007, Nokia E90 Communicator has been made available on the market starting June 2007. Those that are looking to replaces their oldish Communicators or simply need an improved business tool will have to pay a high price as the smartphone costs around 1,000 bucks.
