592 millions of Chinese use cell phones

More than 45 percent of China's 1.3 billion population now use cellular phones, government figures reveal. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said cell phone subscribers in China jumped 44.8 million in the first five months of this year to reach 592 million at the end of May. The increase is credited to rate cuts announced by mobile operators to draw more customers.

On the other side, the report said the number of landline or fixed-line users dropped by 6.5 million to 358 million in the same period. The jump in the number of cellular phone subscribers translated to substantial gains for the telecommunications sector, which reported revenues of $48 billion in the first five months of this year, up 9.6 percent from year-ago levels.

The new Skype 4.0 Beta for Windows

Skype, the popular free VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protcol) unit of eBay, June 18 released a revamped platform that makes it easier for the service's 309 million users to make video calls from their computers. The new Skype 4.0 Beta for Windows aims to leverage the factoid that in the first quarter of 2008, 14 billion Skype calls, or 28 percent, were video calls. That's the biggest change and it is a slam dunk at a time when users are increasingly using the Web as a preferred means of communication with friends, colleagues and business partners.

Short of being face-to-face with your best friend whose summering in Paris, Skype 4.0 lets you conduct video chats with he or she from U.S. to Europe right from your computer to her laptop by making a single click on the Video call button. Bank of America announced today that more than 1 million of its customers have signed up to bank by cell phone. The Charlotte bank's mobile banking program, launched about a year ago, lets customers check balances and recent transactions, pay bills, transfer funds and find the nearest branch. Bank of America and other banks - including Wachovia Corp., BB&T Corp., and the smaller Bank of Granite Corp. - have marketed mobile banking as a way for consumers to catch up on banking tasks even if they're away from a computer. Bank of America's mobile banking is free and compatible with most cell phones that can connect to the Internet. Almost all mobile banking users check their account balances via cell phone, the bank reported. About 40 percent also transfer funds and pay bills. About 80 percent are under 45.

Beware of calls from these numbers

The Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana warns consumers to beware of calls from two numbers: (201) 621-5694 and (201) 621-5695, from which an area resident reported receiving calls every day, numerous times, on her cell phone, despite her being listed on the Do Not Call Registry. The customer said the numbers appeared to be unlisted or not available via whitepages.com. Whenever she tried to reach them, the numbers were busy, so she was unable to determine who the caller was, the bureau said, adding it appears both of the numbers are part of a scam.

The second number is a scam number that will call and say it's regarding a government grant for which the consumer has applied. They claim they will send you free money for only $3.88 in shipping and handling. Once again, scam. Some people even said they asked for personal information (Social Security. addresses and other information).

Cell phone statistics

For nearly three in 10 households, don’t even bother trying to call them on a landline phone. They either only have a cell phone or seldom if ever take calls on their traditional phone.

The federal figures, released this week, showed that reliance on cells is continuing to rise at the expense of wired telephones.

In the second half of last year:

• 16 percent of households only had cell phones

• 13 percent also had landlines but got all or nearly all their calls on their cells

• The number of wireless-only households grew by 2 percentage points since the first half of last year.

• Underscoring the rapid growth, in early 2004 just 5 percent had only cell phones.

• Households with cell phones who rarely if ever use their landlines grew by 1 percentage point since the first half of last year.

Expand Flash technology in handsets

In an aggressive bid to deliver the rich graphic Web experience available on desktop computers to mobile handsets, San Jose softwaremaker Adobe Systems Inc. is partnering with the five biggest cell phone manufacturers to smooth the way to deploy its Flash technology.

Adobe's plan, called the Open Screen Project, will remove a number of barriers for mobile developers who are looking to use Adobe Flash, the technology that brings many of the interactivity, graphics and video features of the Web to life. Manufacturers Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson along with technology companies like Intel, Cisco, Marvell and ARM will work with Adobe to establish a consistent version of Flash that will work across multiple operating systems and browsers.

XpressMusic has been one of the most successful logos ever created by the Finnish giant, Nokia. It seems that Nokia's 5310 candy-bar might be the right answer to Sony Ericsson's growing line of Walkman series devices. Slimmer than any other music phone available on the market, Nokia 5310 Xpress Music is one of the few handsets to feature a dedicated audio chipset. Even though its price might suggest that it belongs to the mid-level class, in terms of quality Nokia 5310 handset is definitely a tier 1 device. Because of the low size thickness, almost all the important ports and keys have been moved on top of the device. Nokia 5310 XpressMusic runs on a S40 5th Edition interface, which is the latest user-interface coming from Nokia. If you wonder what happened with the 4th Edition, which should've been out right before the 3rd then look no further, as Nokia decided to drop it this one's favor. If you had a Nokia handset before that didn't have a Symbian OS, then this candy-bar will probably feel the same.

China reached 221 million of internet users

China has surpassed the United States to become the world's largest Internet-using population, reaching 221 million by the end of February. The number of Internet users in China was 210 million at the end of last year, only 5 million fewer than the U.S. Internet users then, Xinhua news agency said, quoting the China Internet Network Information Centre.

Internet censorship is common in China, where the government employs an elaborate system of filters and tens of thousands of human monitors to survey surfing habits, surgically clipping sensitive content. But the Internet has most recently become an important tool in countering anti-China protest dogging the Olympic torch relay with an outpouring of nationalism and indignation.

Yet cell phone advertising represents just about 1 percent of the total money spent on advertising. eMarketer projects that the $421 million spent on cell phone ads in the United States in 2006 will grow to $4.7 billion by 2011 and exceed $6.5 billion in 2012.

Advertisers speak of an ominous sounding "paradigm shift" in mobile advertising, where more of the spam will be multimedia, targeted and tracked. One use for ads will be subsidized services. We may very soon see major carriers offering free wireless service in exchange for ads. Those ads will pop up in the middle of YouTube videos, or play at the beginning of phone calls.

Panasonic rules in Japan

Panasonic has become the first cell-phone manufacturer to ship 100 million units in the Japanese market. The company first entered the market in 1979 when it launched its TZ-801 analog handset for the new car phone service of NTT Public Corp., the government-owned forerunner to the privatized NTT. It followed these six years later with the TZ-802A in 1985. The handset was a shoulder phone, so called because it could detached from a car holder and carried around over the user's shoulder. It weight about 7 kilograms, which is about 70 times the weight of today's handsets.

The first handheld phone from Panasonic, the TZ-802B, was a brick-like model launched in 1987. It debuted its first digital model for NTT's PDC (Personal Digital Communications) network, a Japan-developed second generation standard that failed to take off overseas, in 1991, and by June 1997 had hit shipments of 10 million phones. More recently Panasonic was one of the first phone makers to produce a handset for NTT DoCoMo's 3G services, which was the first commercial 3G service to launch when it started in 2001. At about the same time Panasonic hit shipments of 50 million handsets.

Android. A new operating system for cell phones.

After initially being standoffish, the head of AT&T Inc.'s wireless arm has taken a liking to Google Inc.'s project to create a new operating system for cell phones.

AT&T has been something of a holdout from Google's Open Handset Alliance. T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel Corp. are members, and Verizon Wireless has said it will throw its network open to any device, which would include phones with the software, called Android.

One of Google's aims with the software is to make its Web services, like search, e-mail and maps, easily accessible on a cell phone. By extension, it wants to extend its dominance in Internet advertising to the wireless sphere. Phones using the software are expected to show up later this year.

3G mobile networks

In the U.S. mobile broadband market, all major mobile carriers except T-Mobile have launched 3G mobile networks. Geotate has developed a software-based GPS system that could overcome many of the challenges inherent in today's geo-tagging systems in cameras, personal navigation devices and mobile phones. Fonality have released a significant upgrade to their flagship hybrid-hosting platform, PBXtra 4.0. It's been over a year since the last release, and the time has not been frittered away. PBXtra has so many new features and improvements we're just going to hit the high points. The first one is its FindMe function has been so improved it might as well be called Stalker. Except you can turn it off. Anyway it uses a bit of clever artificial intelligence to determine presence—when it detects that your mouse or keyboard have not moved for a set period of time, it forwards your calls in whatever way you've configured forwarding. But what happens if you're already on the phone but not touching the computer? No problem, because you have already configured it to not go looking for you when you're already on the phone. It also finds your active SIP device no matter where you are, whether you're in the office or at a remote location.

The FindMe control panel lets you easily create complex FindMe rules, such as times of day and days of the week, whitelists, super-VIP priority whitelists, and blacklists. A new feature that goes along with FindMe is Boomerang Mobile Integration. Boomerang allows calls received on mobile phones to be "boomeranged" back to any extension with a few keypresses. You can also record calls and store them on your PBXtra server. The new Sprint Mogul Phone

Sprint Nextel Corp. is upgrading one of its cell phone models so that it can connect to a faster data network, doubling its download speeds and boosting upload speeds by about eight times. Both Sprint and Verizon Wireless operate so-called EV-DO Rev. A networks, but have used them only for laptop cards. Their fastest phones have used the older and slower EV-DO Rev. 0 network. Researchers have previously explored this territory, but Carnegie Mellon University scientists tried a new tack: they looked at the brain. They used brain imaging to show that listening to a cell phone significantly reduces the brain activity that occurs during undistracted driving. This drop in brain function increases driving mistakes - such as weaving out of the lane or hitting a berm on the shoulder of the road.

In the study, to be published in the journal Brain Research, 29 drivers, ages 18 to 25, used a driving simulator while inside a sophisticated brain scanning machine, called functional MRI. They steered a car along an empty but winding two-lane highway at a fixed speed of 43 miles per hour. Then, they repeated the simulation while listening to statements of general knowledge. After each statement, they had five seconds to say whether it was true or false. The MRI measured second-by-second changes in activity in 20,000 brain locations. It showed that listening caused a 37 percent decrease in activity in the parietal lobe, which controls skills involved in driving. Activity also decreased in the occipital lobe, the center of visual information processing. At the same time, listening increased activity in the area of the cortex that is linked to language.
