HTC Touch review

HTC Touch comes to challenge the PDA landscape and prove that Pocket PCs can compete with what some would call 'fashion phones'. The main advantages of the device are its stylish design and interface and the innovatory TouchFlo technology which simplifies finger-based operation and tries to make the use of the stylus only a matter of choice. The HTC Touch is also known under the names P3450 and Elf, the latter suiting it well if we consider its diminutive size. Several operators are offering rebranded versions of the PDA under different names, such as MDA Touch from T-Mobile and XDA Nova from O2. The HTC Touch can be purchased at a price of about $500, or less if bought with a mobile operator contract.

Of course, one can not overlook the context in which the Touch appeared: the near launch of the iPhone. According to HTC, the Touch spent more than two years in development, so the eventual similarities between the two devices are simple coincidences. The matter is not that important though, as the devices address different segments of the market, with the Touch probably being favored by those looking for a productivity tool, while the iPhone is a multimedia phone (at least until Apple decides to make 3rd party applications available for the iPhone).

Motorola plans to launch its next-generation Linux-based "Ming" handsets

Motorola plans to launch its next-generation Linux-based "Ming" handsets in the second quarter of 2008, with the hand input intelligence handsets to be available in both high-end and entry-level versions. Previously, the Ming was released only in a high-end version. While Motorola's R&D center in Beijing will continue to handle the development of the high-end version of the new Ming handsets, the US vendor will outsource the production of the new entry-level Ming handsets to the Taiwan-based Inventec Group, who also noted that the new Ming handsets will continue to support the 2.5G standard.

Motorola on December 17 launched its high-end 3.5G RAZR V9 in Taiwan, and the company plans to introduce in Taiwan a Symbian-based ROKR Z8, Windows Mobile-based Q9 and three entry-level models, including the W360 and W213, before the end of this year. Handsets supporting the 3G standard will account for 50% of all handsets sold in Taiwan in 2008, Chen projected.

Nokia N-Gage gaming device

I'm sure many of you still remember the first Nokia N-Gage device. Some people have compared the original gaming phone to a plastic taco, and as such, it didn't go over quite as well as Nokia has hoped. Well, you already know about Nokia revitalizing the N-Gage branding in software form (starting with the N81), but they've also got new hardware too!

In this patent drawing, we see what could be the next-generation Nokia N-Gage gaming device. It'll naturally be a cell phone too, but it's definitely got a mobile gaming slant to it. In fact, there are handles that swing out much like the hand grips found on the PlayStation controller or the ones found on the GameCube controller. I'd say that the device looks alright as a handheld gaming machine, but how will it work as a cell phone? I think the N81 does a much better job in that respect.

IE8 passes the ACID2 test

It's good to see that IE8 passes the ACID2 test, but is it really completely standards compliant yet? And, as others have pointed out, what will happen to all the pages designed to run in IE before, will they design a system in the program that lets it render the "broken" code correctly? It's great, from a design perspective, that Microsoft finally ironed out this particular bug, but there are plenty more, and a lot more than will spring up, after this.

My final wish is that IE8 will work with WinXP. If it's Vista only, all of my enthusiasm is deflated. I want IE8 to be available to all modern Windows users. Scratch that, I want IE8 to be forced on all WindowsXP users and higher. Stick it in XP SP3 and make it a mandatory part of the service pack.
